Some History of Robin Hood

Robin Hood is an English tale from the 13th to 14th centuries, of an outlaw that had tremendous popular favor because it was said that he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Nobody knows the exact origin of the tale of Robin Hood, as it was more of a story told through song by traveling minstrels. The purpose of this type of story telling was that most common folks during those times did not read and write, and because of the high level of illiteracy the good story teller was a highly sought after entertainer.

In any event, the story of Robin Hood grew, and as an outlaw, he was banished from the town. So he lived in the nearby forest with his group of outlaws known as the “band of merry men“.

Robin Hood was said to be an excellent archer, and through his archery Robin was able to accomplish great feats and attacking nearby travelers to give to the poor.

Throughout the centuries the story changes and expands as it is repeated over and over for different audiences. In later years, Robin meets the lovely Maid Marian. In some stories Robin Hood defends King Edward, while in later stories it is King Richard, the Lionhearted. Even his home in the forest changes, but the most common tale claims it to be Sherwood Forest, in Nottinghamshire.

No matter how the tale is told, there is something inside human nature that secretly votes for an outlaw to prevail if the purpose of the outlaws crime is to right some injustice or some social wrong. That is classic Robin Hood, who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. I don’t know if Robin Hood would be as popular today because now we just call it “income taxes”.

The story is still popluar today as the movie was remade once again, this time with Russell Crowe playing the lead part of Robin Hood.
